The Globe Islands are a group of tiny artificial islands built in the style of a world map in the Persian Gulf, off the coast of Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The World Islands are one of the numerous artificial island projects in Dubai, and are made primarily of sand dredged from Dubai's shallow coastal seas. The World's developer is Nakheel Properties, and the idea was envisioned by Dubai's ruler, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. Van Oord and Boskalis, two Dutch (joint venture) specialist businesses, completed the building. The Palm Jumeirah was also built by the same firms.
